Rangeland Management Specialist

Description:

This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Superintendent, Northern Cheyenne Agency in Lame Deer, Montana.
NOTE:
TRAVEL AND RELOCATION EXPENSES WILL NOT BE AUTHORIZED. ANY RELOCATION EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH REPORTING FOR DUTY WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SELECTED EMPLOYEE.

Requirements:

This position is OPEN UNTIL FILLED and may be extended or closed prior to the current closing date. Applications will be reviewed every two weeks; the first cut-off date for applications is 10 business days from the opening date and every two weeks thereafter. Applicants with 10-point Veterans' Preference who submit a complete application after each two week cut-off date, but before the List of Eligibles is issued, will be considered and referred on the List, if qualified.

Individual Occupational Requirements
Basic Requirements
D egree: range management; or a related discipline that included at least 42 semester hours in a combination of the plant, animal, and soil sciences, and natural resources management, as follows:
-Range Management -- At least 18 semester hours of course work in range management, including courses in such areas as basic principles of range management, range plants, range ecology, range inventories and studies, range improvements, and ranch or rangeland planning.
-Directly Related Plant, Animal, and Soil Sciences -- At least 15 semester hours of directly related courses in the plant, animal, and soil sciences, including at least one course in each of these three scientific areas, i.e., plant, animal, and soil sciences. Courses in such areas as plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, animal nutrition, livestock production, and soil morphology or soil classification are acceptable.
-Related Resource Management Studies -- At least 9 semester hours of course work in related resource management subjects, including courses in such areas as wildlife management, watershed management, natural resource or agricultural economics, forestry, agronomy, forages, and outdoor recreation management.

OR

Combination of education and experience: at least 42 semester hours of course work in the combination of plant, animal, and soil sciences and natural resources management shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below.

GS-7: 1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement

OR

1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-5.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Develop and implement grazing management procedures on grazing lands; Organize and carry out forage inventories; Plan vegetative management practices; Experience working with livestock operations.

GS-9: 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree

OR

1 year equivalent to at least GS-7. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Develop and review multiple-use conservation plans on grazing lands; Provide guidance and assistance to land owners and operators, as well as field office staff, on the identification of resource concerns on grazing lands to ensure that conservation plans provide for the application of technically accurate and adequate practices; Following up with landowners to implement grazing management plans, evaluate problems, and propose land improvement alternative; Conduct onsite measurement, monitoring, collection, and analysis of data regarding land use and natural resources conditions and trends.

GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

OR

1 year equivalent to at least GS-9. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Analyze environmental data and advise on conventional rangeland management issues and projects; Exercise independent judgment to perform recurring, well-defined, and moderately difficult range improvement projects such as preparing segments of land use plans under multiple-use sustained yield concepts, designing and implementing plant community changes, developing and implementing prescribed burns, or other initiatives of comparable scope and complexity; Prepare segments of conventional rangeland use plans under multiple-use sustained yield concepts or assist in the development of activity plans that included range and watershed improvement.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. NOTE: Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable.
