The primary purpose of this position is to inspect, troubleshoot, repair, modify, remove, and install C-17 aircraft engines and Auxiliary Power Units (APU). This position also performs post maintenance operational checks such as leak checks, engine trims and adjustments and ensure maintenance is accomplished within specified guidelines per technical orders.

Requirements:

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8600, Engine Overhaul Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge of the installation, operation, and repair of gas turbine or reciprocating aircraft engines and accessory systems.
2. Knowledge of engine repair practices to identify and correctly choose between alternative methods and trade techniques, adapt accepted repair procedures to new or unfamiliar engines or accessory systems, to anticipate required tools and parts, and to set up the work area.
3. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures.
4. Knowledge of documentation procedures.
5. Skill in the use of measuring instruments such as vibration analyzers, pyrometers, and test benches.
6. Skill in the interpretation and use of technical orders, manufacturers' manuals, maintenance bulletins, and other technical information. Ability to troubleshoot engine malfunctions, interpret trouble reports or observed instrument readings, appearances, etc., make a tentative diagnosis; select needed too.ls and test equipment; and disassemble the engine or accessory system to locate the defect. Ability to repair and rework engine parts and components and replace accessories such as portions of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

Physical Effort:
The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Must stand, stoop, bend, and reach. Frequently handles items weighing up to 1 0 pounds, and often lift and carry assemblies weighing up to 50 pounds. Hoists, hand trucks, lifts, and other employees are available to assist when handling heavy or awkward items. May be required to climb steps and ladders and stand on slippery or inclined surfaces.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed outside or inside in areas that are drafty and noisy, such as aircraft hangars. Stands on concrete or hard composition floors for long periods of time. Frequently exposed to grease and solvents, to noise from drills and hammers, and to the possibility of cuts and abrasions from handling tools.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
