The primary purpose of this position, Clerk, GS-0303-03, is to perform somewhat difficult and responsible clerical work in office, business, or fiscal operations, requiring some training and experience gained from previous work experience and training, a working knowledge of a subject matter area, or the exercise of independent judgement in accordance with well-established procedures.

Requirements:

In order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have six months of general experience at a level close to the work of this position. Typically, we would find this experience in work within this field that is closely related. General experience is described as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills to perform the duties of this position.

OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Applicants must have successfully completed education 1-year above high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education has been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university . NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS WITH YOUR APPLICATION IF USING EDUCATION AS A SUBSTITUTION OF EXPERIENCE.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Working knowledge of general office administrative and clerical procedures to distribute mail, answer telephone, keep appointment calendar, maintain files/office forms, and order supplies.
2. Ability to learn an organization's functions and procedures sufficient to receive visitors or telephone calls, distribute mail, and maintain files, etc.
3. Ability to read and interpret specific procedural guidelines pertaining to administrative support, including locally developed equipment operating and document processing instructions, which are directly applicable to the work.
4. Ability to learn filing systems and procedures.
5. Ability to communicate effectively orally using tact and courtesy.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
AGE REQUIREMENT:
(1) Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, OR (2) at least 16 years of age AND (a) have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) be currently enrolled in a secondary school and work ONLY during school vacation periods .

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires some physical exertion, such as frequent periods of standing, sitting, walking, reaching, or similar activities while performing duties of this position. Some physical exertion is also required when carrying and/or lifting light items like paper or books.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in various settings, such as office buildings, warehouses, or industrial facilities. The employee may be required to work outside in all types of weather. The work may involve moderate risks requiring the exercise of safety precautions when working around/in industrial areas. Some work settings may include exposure to fumes or noise from aircraft or industrial operations.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
