Description:

The Department of the Interior is devoted to protecting and preserving the natural resources of this great nation, including National Parks, Landmarks, and the well-being of communities, including those of Native American, Alaska Natives and affiliated Islanders.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
Minimum eligibility requirements for these positions are based on possession of the appropriate Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot certificates and/or appropriate military ratings, meeting the applicable flight hour requirements, meeting the appropriate education and/or experience requirements, and possession of the knowledge and skills required for the position.

To qualify for this position you must meet the (1) General Requirements, (2) Medical Requirements, (3) General Aviation Requirements (Certificates and Ratings), and (4) Specialized Experience for the series to which you are applying.

(1) General Requirements for All Positions
Valid State driver's license; Fluency in the English language; High school diploma or equivalent; and No chemical dependencies or drug abuse that could interfere with job performance. (2) Medical Requirements
Applicants must possess a current first or second class medical certificate in accordance with FAA regulations. Both meet the intent of the requirement.

(3) General Aviation Requirements: Certificates and Ratings
For all grades and specializations, applicants must possess a Commercial Pilot Certificate with instrument rating, the appropriate military rating, or other certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements of the Commercial Pilot Certificate, e.g., an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate.
Minimum Flight Hour Requirements for All Applicants:
Total Flight Time -- Flight time as pilot-in-command in aircraft of any weight or category is creditable for this requirement. Each 2 hours acquired as a copilot, an FAA certificated flight engineer on a commercial air carrier, or a military flight officer on a military air carrier may be substituted for 1 hour of flight time in meeting the minimum total flight time requirements. Pilot-in-Command -- Only flight hours acquired as pilot-in-command are creditable. Requirements: Category Flight Hours Total Flight Time - 1500. Pilot-In-Command - 1000. (4) Specialized Experience
To qualify for the GS-13, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
1. Developing technical communications,
2. Applying safety management system principles, and
3. Participating in aviation investigations.

Conditions of Employment:

Driver's License:
A valid state driver's license is required to drive to various field locations as required. Therefore, you must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.

Physical Demands:
Although normally conducted in an office environment, the work does require some physical exertion and hardships when conducting on-site investigations. Some lifting and personal transportation of equipment and tools necessary to conduct the on-site investigation will be required. Occasionally, extensive hiking may be required. Long periods of standing and long periods of sitting in confined cockpits are required as a routine part of the work.

Working Conditions:
Most of the work is accomplished in an office environment, but some work is accomplished outside. Often work is performed away from the home office in isolated field locations. During on-site investigations, work may be conducted in all possible weather conditions such as heavy rains; sub-zero,
severe arctic conditions for several hours; hot, arid climate. Terrain may include high, rugged mountains; dense forests; swamps and grasslands; desert areas; in open-seas, rivers, and lakes; and in the Alaska tundra. In certain aviation operations, it is necessary to wear protective clothing such as protective helmet, gloves, boots, and fire-retardant clothing. Work is often performed away from the home office in isolated field locations. Travel to remote locations on short notice (i.e., less than 24 hours) may be required. Extensive travel may be required and may occur at different times throughout the year.

Additional Requirements:
This position is subject to medical requirements and incumbent must maintain medical requirements. This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and is subject to future drug testing. Selectee must obtain UAS pilot qualification as defined by DOI Operational Procedures Manual (OPM) 09-11 on
selected Department-operated UAS within the first year upon entrance on duty. Completion of an aviation safety certificate program, military aviation safety school, or similar training with the National Transportation Safety Board.
