The primary purpose of this position is to enforce law, maintain law and order, preserve the peace, and protect life and civil rights within the jurisdiction of the military installation. To perform Combat Arms (CA) training and maintenance on CA and promote personal and weapons safety to assigned installation and tenant personnel.

  • Graduation from the Combat Arms Training and Maintenance Apprentice Course and Combat Arms Training and Maintenance Craftsmen Course is desirable. (Reference AFI 36-2226).
  • Incumbent will be exposed to the day-to-day dangers associated with law enforcement and security duties.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain first responder training/certifications required in CPR techniques, self-aid buddy care, and first aid on the job and maintain annually.
  • Recurring training is required to keep the incumbent knowledgeable on the updated specialized tactics, techniques and procedures necessary for preparation and response to catastrophic events, terrorist attacks and related threats to installations.
  • The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as running in pursuits or emergency responses, long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities. Employees engage in such exertions when responding to alarms and walking foot patrols in and around buildings. This position may require common physical characteristics and abilities and dexterity and the strength to pursue, and detain uncooperative suspects. In addition, this position requires the ability to employ "infantry" small unit tactics involving fire and maneuver with rapid advancing movement between defensive positions while wearing protective gear for extended periods of time, as well as the ability to employ "Active Shooter" response tactics as a member of a small team.
  • This position is designated as a key position IAW AFI 36-507. Duties of this position are essential to the accomplishment of wartime/contingency operations. Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling of the position during an emergency are not available.
  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions. IAW, DoDI 3020-42, Defense Continuity Programs.
    In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, to include the occupational requirements IOR for the GS Police Series 0083.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
    CURRENT OR PRIOR FEDERAL EMPLOYEE applicants must have and one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

    EXTERNAL APPLICANTS must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

    This is a Term position NTE 2 Years; the individual selected for this position may be extended without further competition. Current Federal civilian employees may apply for this position using "Reinstatement" eligibility and if selected, a break in service of at least 4 calendar days may be required prior to appointment to this position.

    FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-05 level is required for Current and Prior Federal Employees to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. One year at the GS-06 level is required for External Employees to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of police officer procedures and operating methods to perform the full range of police officer activities independently to include the rights of detained individuals and organizational rules regarding the appropriate use of force to be used in the apprehension of persons.
Knowledge of special operating requirements, methods, and procedures for enforcing specialized personnel access controls and preventing unauthorized access to areas where stringent security requirements are enforced. Knowledge of Armory operations and procedures. Knowledge of principles, techniques, and safety of instruction used in combat arms weapons training, firing range instruction, weapons security, and combat arms minor repair procedures. Skills in combat arms resources management, including maintenance of assigned weapons, classrooms, firing range structures, munitions buildings, and weapons storage facilities. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and instruct training courses in a classroom seminar setting. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
