In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. There is no position in the normal line of progression in the organization that is one grade lower than the position being filled. In such instances, 1 year of specialized experience at the second lower level is creditable for in-service applicants. However, for external applicants (i.e., those without current or prior Federal competitive or excepted service), 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower level is required.
Experience required for In-Service Candidates: One year of specialized experience which includes performing laboratory analysis of radioactive materials; collecting data through monitoring and sampling to identify hazards; implementing radiation safety policies to reduce exposure; & conducting tests of x-ray equipment to ensure proper performance This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
Experience required for External Candidates: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with surveillance of radioactive equipment, materials, and/or laser systems; disposal of radioactive waste; operating advanced radiation detection and medical equipment; and assisting with providing guidance to project officers of experimental testing programs on safety measures/requirements for test plans/items that may present radiation hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

Time in Grade Requirement In-service : Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the second lower grade or equivalent (GS-9).
Time in Grade Requirement external : External applicants, (i.e., those without current or prior Federal competitive service) you must have 52 weeks of experience at the first lower grade level or equivalent (GS-10).
