In addition to the education requirement, to qualify at the GS-09 level you must meet one of the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Hydrologist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: working with senior specialists to plan and coordinate projects involving the analysis and evaluation of flow and transport of sediment or pollutants in stream channels and ground water; assessing, monitoring, and researching existing work on the nutrients, pollutants, and other components in ground and surface water; evaluating data, identifying trends in movement of water and any known contaminants and providing feedback on anomalies to more senior specialists; and applying standard flood forecasting procedures to compensate for missing or conflicting measurements.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Master's or equivalent degree, or two (2) full years (36 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 18 semester hours may be combined with experience.

In addition to the education requirement, to qualify at the GS-11 level you must meet one of the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Hydrologist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: providing input and advice on watershed actions or plans associated with forest management, wildlife management, road construction or other activities; providing technical advice on water rights applications and claims; assessing, monitoring, and researching existing work on the nutrients, pollutants, other components in ground water and surface water; and determining short-term flood risks in identified areas.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three (3) full years (54 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field of study.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 36 semester hours may be combined with experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work is typically performed in an office setting with no special physical demands. However, work may also be performed in the field which involves periods of walking, bending, climbing, or driving motor vehicles to worksites. The work may also involve some overnight travel for training, meetings, and site visits.

Work Environment: The work is usually performed in an office setting. However, work time may also be spent periodically visiting field sites. Field site visits are typically performed in either an outdoor setting subject to weather changes, diverse terrain, and safety hazards associated with working around complex features and/or construction, or an industrial setting subject to noise, fumes, and moving machinery. Both settings may require the use of personal protective equipment. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the scientist complies with safety instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others' safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisor.
