This position is located in John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, in the Paleontology Division.

Open to the first 50 applicants or until 04/15/2024 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration.

Temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year but may be extended each year without further competition, if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available.

Requirements:

All qualifications must be met by 11:59 PM EST when the applicant limit is reached (which may be sooner than 04/15/2024).

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience includes work in the fields of paleontology, geophysics, archeology/anthropology or geology; assisting with fossil preparation, field work in paleontology, paleontology research, paleontology database management, paleontology monitoring, paleo art, or specimen management of fossils; assisting with natural resources research projects; compiling and analyzing scientific data into reports; operating complex sampling, monitoring, and laboratory equipment; or using computer programs such as databases to compile, store, retrieve, analyze and report resource management data. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents . You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one (1) full year of graduate study leading to a Master's degree, Ph.D., or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited educational institution directly related to this position in an appropriate field of science, such as paleontology, archaeology/anthropology, geology, earth science, earth history, biology or other directly related fields. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of an equivalent combination of experience and graduate education such as six months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and half a year of graduate level study in courses directly related to the work of this position (50% of the qualifying education). You must include transcripts and hours per week worked in your resume. A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
