Machinists A/B/C

Aerojet Rocketdyne
West Palm Beach Full-day Full-time

Description:

We are seeking a Machnist A/B/C to work at our West Palm Beach, FL facility to perform layout, programming, and machining operations connected with the set up and operation of jig boring and horizontal boring mill machines including related machining centers to create production and developmental engine parts.

These positions are for 2nd Shift, but can be changed as needed to meet the changing business demands. Position level will be filled based on education and experience of identified candidate. These positions may be filled at the level of the identified candidate.

This posting may represent one or more specific immediate or near-term openings. Those who express an interest may be considered for current and future positions.

Our West Palm Beach, FL facility is home to the family of RL10 Upper-Stage Rocket Engines that have propelled missions to every planet in the solar system! This site is also the Hypersonics center of excellence which built the scramjet engine that powered the record-setting X-51A Waverider.

Essential Functions:

  • Under direction of higher grade machinist, working lead, or supervisor follow detailed instructions to plan, layout and perform basic setups and operations.
  • Make minor decisions in setups, holding procedures, and methods, following precedents.
  • Refer complex and difficult situations to higher graded boring machine operators.
  • Use shop mathematics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and handbook formulas to find missing dimensions, convert angular to linear dimensions, develop less involved programs, work from drawings, layout parts, and to solve other machining problems.
  • Select from available supply the cutting tools and holders most appropriate for type of material and cuts to be made and when not otherwise specified have them altered if warranted to meet requirements or improve machining and prepare sketches of special cutting tools and holders, and arrange for grinding when required.
  • Apply machines to check dimensions and locations of less involved partial or fully completed parts and assemblies when necessary.
  • Add stiffeners and bumpers to setup, as necessary to support part rigidly and avoid vibration and distortion of thin walled or other flimsy parts from tool pressure.
  • Setup end measure to locate table and spindle as appropriate.
  • Operate hoists, lifting devices, and fork lift truck as required.
  • Maintain necessary tools, materials, and/or supplies to ensure steady work-flow, as well as maintain a neat and clean work area.
  • Maintain reports, documentation, and logs as required.
  • Comply with environmental/safety regulations and programs requirements to ensure safe working conditions and to preserve a healthy environment. Comply with company quality and continuous improvement initiatives. Keep current with training certifications for compliance with governmental and company regulations.
  • May be required to train for, obtain and maintain licenses, operator permits and certifications for assigned area.
  • When utilizing CNC machines work with programmers and higher grade operators to plan and setup controls and debug programs.
  • Perform somewhat complex operations which form to exacting drawing dimensions and tolerances for concentricity, location, and true position, parallelism, angular relationships, involving several interrelated dimensions and cuts, or holes located from one or more reference points.
  • Work from drawings, WI, and detailed instructions of supervisor to setup and operate jig boring and horizontal boring mill machines and related machining centers.
  • Determine the sequence of operations, the methods required to use the fewest holding fixtures and setups and the setup for numerical control or manual machine operation.
  • Machine locating diameters on face plate, drill locating holes in holding fixtures, and make or have made holding fixtures and devices, plugs, adaptors, spaces, and other holding aides, adapting available devices when existing tooling is inadequate.
  • Pick-up reference points, check location of internal and external details, and pertinent centerlines. Shift and shim part to position so that all surfaces will clean-up and wall thickness will be as specified.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Desired 2-3 Year Technical Certification or Trade School or equivalent

Desired Qualifications:

  • 1-5 years direct experience

Knowledge of:

  • Appropriate tooling, instruments, methods, procedures, and operation sequences.
  • Machinability of a wide variety of materials and the speeds, feeds, and cutting tools so associated, and the various work holding methods and devices.
  • Basic trigonometry, geometry, and algebra principles and operations to solve problems.
  • Engineering specifications, drawings, blueprints, production plans, and/or work instructions.
  • Electronic record keeping and reporting.
  • Federal and state environmental and safety regulations as well as company guidelines and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Meet the continuous mental and visual demand for extended periods to plan, layout and make setups for complex work, operate machine, and check work.
  • Interpret, explain, and apply applicable codes and regulations.
  • Prepare reports, record, and maintain accurate files.
  • Prioritize work and meet critical deadlines.
  • Understand and follow instructions, and apply departmental policies and procedures to perform assigned tasks.
  • Read and interpret graphic instructions such as blueprints, sketches, models, or other visual aids.
  • Use precision measuring tools.
  • Use hoists and rigging equipment.
