The Supervisory Biomedical Engineer operates under the Facilities Management Service - Engineering Section within the Western North Carolina VA Healthcare System and the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC. The incumbent has complete responsibility for the Biomedical Engineering program and serves as the Senior Technology Management official for the medical center.**A Recruitment/Relocation Incentive has been authorized for this position.**

English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Education or Experience. Bachelor's Degree or Higher in Engineering. To be creditable, the curriculum must be from a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. Examples of acceptable engineering degrees include: Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Biochemical Engineering
OR Certification as a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE) and a Bachelor's Degree not listed above. Certification means having successfully passed a CCE written and oral examination administered by the American College of Clinical Engineering. If appointed with a CCE requirement, the employee must maintain certification throughout employment. The American College of Clinical Engineering determines acceptable educational preparation and degree requirements for CCE eligibility.
Grade Determinations: To qualify for the GS-13 level, Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade. Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to:
Preferred experience: Candidate will have clearly defined experience in a healthcare environment (medical clinic, hospital, medical center, or equivalent). Experience should focus on biomedical equipment (networking or troubleshooting), patient safety, and accreditation and regulatory compliance.
Physical Requirements. VA Directive and Handbook 5019.Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of the position. The basis on which agencies may establish specific medical standards or physical requirements is discussed in 5 CFR 339. A physical condition or impairment may be disqualifying for employment only if there is a direct relationship between the condition and the nature of the duties of the specific position being filled. The physical requirements for the position are: Moderate lifting and carrying 15-44 pounds; Use of fingers; both hands required; walking, standing, crawling, kneeling up to 2 hours a day for each; Depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing aid permitted; good vision with or without glasses. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands, both legs and repeated bending.
Work Environment: The position may at times involve exposure to a work environment that may include intermittent excessive noise, dust, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around moving objects or vehicles. The incumbent may also be exposed to infective patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders; Emotional and Mental Stability: The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. working around Fumes; Radiant energy; Electrical energy; working closely with others; working alone.
