Description:

This position is in the Aquatics Section of the Recreation Division; Morale, Welfare, and Recreation, of Commander Navy Region Hawaii, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The purpose of this position is to ensure that all aquatics programs and activities operate efficiently and safely according to regulations.

A qualified candidate must possess:

American Red Cross Lifeguard and/or Water Safety Instructor certification in Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instruction/Lifeguard, Water Safety Instruction and CPR for professional rescuer or equivalent is required.

A minimum of one (1) year experience in an Aquatic setting as a Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor or held a lead position with equivalent responsibilities.

Knowledge of aquatic safety, policies and regulations is required.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
This position works under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and receives direction/assignments orally and in writing. Provides feedback to the Aquatics Director in regard to policies, programs, procedures, training and property accountability and condition.

GUIDELINES:
Operates within the scope of published guidelines as set forth by Commander Navy Installations Command (CNIC), regional and local instructions, policies, and regulations. Specific guidelines are available for reference purposes.

Incumbent tests proper balance of chemicals in the water. Readings are taken as required and recorded in a log. Based on testing readings, provides information to Aquatics Director for further guidance.

Plans, assists in planning, and conducts lifeguard certification classes and any other classes established by the Aquatics Director. Decisions as to which programs are to be carried out are discussed and approved by the Aquatics Director prior to implementation.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of delivering various forms of aquatic programs to meet the expressed requirements of customers served. Variations in the work depend on changes in patron numbers,
facility usage, types of patron numbers, programming, and materials available with which to accomplish the task(s). Programs are varied from time to time to meet the needs and requests of patrons with approval and direction from the Aquatics Director.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The work affects the efficiency of the daily operation of the Aquatic Program. The purpose of work is to promote healthy recreation and enhance the well-being and morale of the military community in a first-rate facility.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:
Incumbent has contact with a wide and varied customer base to include but not limited to military personnel of all ranks and rates, civilian employees of all rates and both military and civilian dependents. Contacts outside of the program can include other departments, contractors, business vendors and other Aquatic/Recreation personnel from multiple military entities in the area.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:
Contacts are for the purpose of planning, implementing, and advising the Aquatics Director. Outside contacts are made and reports to the Aquatics Director with information on program ideas, prices, availability of supplies and equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work requires physical dexterity and exertion while swimming/performing a rescue. Considerable standing, sitting, walking, stooping and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs of materials is also required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed outdoors under varying weather conditions. Surfaces around the pool and in locker rooms are slippery and uneven. Swimming pool related chemicals may be manually handled. There is a danger of electrical shock during thunderstorms or on wet surfaces.
